Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the sliced onions and stir occasionally until golden and caramelized, about 12-15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Shape the ground beef into two large patties and season both sides generously with salt and pepper.

Cooking

  • Heat a separate skillet or grill to medium-high and cook the patties for 3-4 minutes on each side, depending on your desired level of doneness. Transfer to a plate and keep warm.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir until well combined.
  • Butter one side of each slice of rye bread and place them, buttered side down, into the preheated skillet.

Assembly

  • On the unbuttered side of each slice, spread a generous amount of the secret sauce. Layer on a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by the cooked beef patty and caramelized onions. Top with another slice of Swiss cheese and close the sandwich with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
  • Grill the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy, ensuring the cheese is melty. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a stellar patty melt, consider using fresh ground beef, experimenting with different cheeses, and adding toppings like lettuce or tomato to personalize your melt.
