Preparation of Mashed Potatoes

  • Fill a medium pot with water and add the salt. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
  • Once boiling, add the cut potatoes and let them boil for about 7 to 8 minutes, or until tender.
  • While potatoes are boiling, heat the butter and milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until melted.
  • After draining the potatoes, return them to the pot to dry out.
  • Mash the potatoes to your desired consistency and stir in the melted butter-milk mixture.
  • Season the mash with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to taste.

Cooking Ground Beef and Gravy

  • In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with 1/4 cup of beef broth until smooth and set aside.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef, cooking until brown.
  • Drain excess liquid and add remaining beef broth, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Allow to simmer for about 5 to 10 minutes until the onion is tender.
  • Whisk in the cornstarch mixture, bring to a boil, and cook until gravy thickens.

Serving

  • Divide mashed potatoes among serving bowls.
  • Top each portion with ground beef and gravy.
  • Serve warm, adding more gravy if desired.

Notes

Consider seasoning your beef with additional herbs like thyme or rosemary. You can add cheese over the mashed potatoes or sautéed mushrooms into the gravy for extra flavor. Prepared mashed potatoes can work in a pinch.
