Ingredients
  

Beef Mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef (85 percent lean)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 0.5 tsp dried thyme
  • 0.5 tsp paprika

Dumpling Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp butter, softened
  • 0.5 cup milk (whole or 2 percent)

Preparation

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add ground beef, browning it until no longer pink. Drain excess fat if using lean beef.
  • Add diced onion and sauté for about 4 minutes until soft and translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  • Stir in the tomato paste, cooking for about a minute. Sprinkle flour over the mixture to thicken the sauce.
  • Gradually stir in beef broth, ensuring no lumps remain. Add dried thyme, paprika, and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 8-10 minutes.

Dumpling Preparation

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt for the dumplings. Cut in softened butter until crumbly, then stir in milk to form a slightly sticky dough.
  • Drop tablespoons of dumpling dough over the bubbling beef mixture.
  • Cover skillet with a lid and reduce heat to low. Steam dumplings for about 15 minutes undisturbed.
  • Check for doneness, let stand uncovered for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use fresh and lean beef for best flavor. Optionally add vegetables for nutrition. Adjust seasonings to taste and experiment with herbs.
