Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the room-temperature butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, mixing thoroughly.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt.
  • Gradually incorporate the dry mixture into the wet ingredients, stirring until the dough comes together.
  • If the dough feels too soft, divide it, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.

Decorating

  • Prepare the icing by dividing it into bowls and adding food coloring.
  • Once cooled, use piping bags or cut plastic bags to decorate the cookies.
  • Let the icing dry completely before serving.

Notes

For thicker cookies, roll out the dough thicker than 1/4 inch. Keep a damp cloth handy while decorating to clean up mistakes.
