Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add in the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  • Pour the heavy cream and whole milk into the pan. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg if using. Allow to simmer.
  • Stir in 1 cup of cheddar cheese and all of the Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish and pour half of the cheese sauce over them.
  • Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce, ensuring all layers are coated.
  • Sprinkle the final ½ cup of cheddar cheese over the top.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, until golden and bubbling.
  • Let the dish rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, use russet potatoes for their starch content. Consider adding sautéed onions or leeks for extra flavor. You can experiment with different cheeses like Gruyère or mozzarella. Don't rush the resting period; it’s crucial for achieving perfect slices.
